Phuket vs Koh Samui: Which Thailand Island Should You Pick?

June 1, 2026

These two islands are the ones most people shortlist, and they’re quite different in practice.

Phuket

Phuket is Thailand’s largest island and the easiest first trip. Direct flights from most of Asia and Europe. Multiple distinct beach areas — Patong, Kata, Karon, Kamala, Nai Harn. Whatever vibe you want, there’s a beach for it.

The downside: Patong is genuinely crowded, and Phuket town traffic can be 30 minutes for 5 km during peak season. The west-coast beaches are pretty but often have brown waves during low season (May-October).

Patong is not for everyone. The beach is fine. The street scene is dense, the nightlife is intense. If you want quiet, stay at Kata Noi or Nai Harn on the south end.

Koh Samui

Samui is in the Gulf of Thailand, about an hour by flight from Bangkok. Smaller than Phuket, more contained, less infrastructure. The beaches are genuinely better — Chaweng Noi and Lamai are the standouts.

You’ll need to rent a scooter or use songthaews (shared pickup trucks). The roads are winding and the island is bigger than it looks on a map. Plan extra time.

The downsides: fewer international flight connections, more rain during November-December (Gulf side gets wetter than Andaman side).

My Take

Go to Phuket if it’s your first time, you want a big island with every amenity, or you’re traveling with kids who need activities.

Go to Koh Samui if you’ve been to Thailand before, you want slower mornings, or you’re celebrating something and want nicer beaches.

Or honestly, pick Phuket for the first half of the trip and ferry over to Koh Samui if you have two weeks.
