Bangkok Transit Guide 2026 - BTS MRT Airport Rail Link

June 1, 2026

Bangkok traffic is brutal. The BTS and MRT will save you an hour each way compared to taxis during rush hour. Here’s what you need to know before your first ride.

BTS Skytrain

Two lines: Sukhumvit (light green) and Silom (dark green). They meet at Siam. If you’re going anywhere touristy — Siam Paragon, EmQuartier, Chatuchak Market on weekends — it’s a BTS stop.

Saphan Taksin connects to the free shuttle boat to Asiatique night market. Worth knowing if you want something different from Khao San.

BTS Fares 2026

  • 16 THB minimum (first two stations)
  • 59 THB maximum (one end to the other)
  • One journey cannot transfer between lines — exiting and re-entering at Siam costs 32 THB round trip

Tickets are bought at machines. They take coins and small banknotes. Or skip the machine: contactless bank cards (Visa/Mastercard) work at the gates since 2023. Rabbit card is the old way and still useful for topping up.

MRT

The blue line runs in a loop around central Bangkok, hitting areas the BTS skips. Chatuchak Park, Hua Lamphong (old Chinatown train station — now closed, but the Chinatown MRT exit puts you in walking distance), Sukhumvit MRT for Terminal 21.

Tickets are single-use tokens from the machine. No stored value needed for short trips.

The MRT and BTS have separate ticketing systems. If you switch lines at Asok/Sukhumvit, you exit one and pay again to enter the other. Budget accordingly.

From Suvarnabhumi (BKK) to Phaya Thai in 30 minutes, 15-45 THB depending on distance. Beats any taxi for traffic reasons — and the price.

Don Mueang (DMK) is the old airport and is not on the ARL. For DMK, you take a bus, taxi, or the A1/A2 bus to BTS Mo Chit.
