Bangkok Street Food: Where to Actually Eat
June 1, 2026
Bangkok has the best street food in the world, by any honest count. This list is what to actually eat, where to find it, and what to skip.
Top 10
1. Pad Thai (ผัดไทย)
The national dish but also the most overrated. Most tourist-pad-thai is mediocre. Two places worth it: Thip Samai near Mahannak (old-school charcoal wok, the original) and Pad Thai Ekkamai (less famous, locals go). Always ask “mai phet.”
50-100 THB. Mild.
2. Tom Yum Goong (ต้มยำกุ้ง)
Hot and sour shrimp soup. The famous version is at Pe Aor near Hua Lamphong (no relation to the MRT station, but close enough to walk). 200-300 THB for a huge pot. Very spicy by default; ask “phet nit noi” (just a little spicy).
100-300 THB. Hot.
3. Som Tam (ส้มตำ)
Green papaya salad. The best are in Isaan restaurants, not random street stalls. Look for a sign that says “Isaan” or “อีสาน.” The version with fermented crab (pu) is the most authentic, also the most challenging. Start with “som tam thai” (no crab) and work up.
40-80 THB. Hot.
Peanut allergy: Most som tam has peanuts. Tell the cook “mai sai thua lisong” (no peanuts). They understand.
4. Khao Man Gai (ข้าวมันไก่)
Hainanese poached chicken over rice. The Bangkok version is better than Singapore’s. Pratunam area has the highest concentration. Khao Man Gai Jae Khia is the famous stall, get there before noon or they sell out.
50-80 THB. Mild.
5. Boat Noodles (ก๋วยเตี๋ยวเรือ)
Tiny bowls of dark broth with rice noodles. The bowl is small (a few bites), which is the point — you order 3-4 bowls per sitting. Best in the Victory Monument area; Baan Kuay Tiew Reua is one good one. Don’t be surprised by the dark color; it’s soy and herbs, not dirty.
30-60 THB per bowl. Mild to medium.
6. Mookata (หมูกระทะ)
Half-grill half-hotpot. A social meal — order one per table and share. Chatuchak Night Market (weekends) has the best atmosphere, though the food is similar everywhere. Pork is the default; some places do seafood for more.
200-400 THB per person. Medium.
7. Mango Sticky Rice (ข้าวเหนียวมะม่วง)
Coconut-soaked sticky rice with ripe mango. Best March-June when mangoes are in season. Vendor count at any market: 5-10, all roughly equal. Look for the one with the most customers.
60-120 THB. Sweet.
8. Kanom Krok (ขนมครก)
Coconut pancakes, crispy outside and custardy inside. Sold hot from cast-iron griddles at every night market. Cheap, no wrong answer, 5 baht per pancake.
20-50 THB. Sweet.
9. Moo Ping (หมูปิ้ง)
Grilled pork skewers marinated in coconut milk and coriander. Perfect late-night snack after drinking. Chang Wattana area and around Khao San at night have the densest clusters.
10 THB per skewer (buy 5+). Mild.
10. Thai Iced Tea (ชาไทย)
Strong black tea with star anise and tamarind, sweetened with condensed milk over ice. Sweet enough to be dessert. Pair with the savories.
30-60 THB. Sweet.
Where to Eat by Area
| Area | Specialty | When |
|---|---|---|
| Chinatown (Yaowarat) | Seafood, bird’s nest, dim sum, oyster omelets | 7pm-1am |
| Chatuchak Weekend Market | Variety, all of the above | Sat/Sun 9am-6pm |
| Pratunam | Khao Man Gai | Lunch |
| Victory Monument | Boat noodles | All day |
| Silom Soi 20 | Night market variety | 6pm-midnight |
| Khao San | Late night, tourist-friendly | 11pm-3am |
Rule of thumb: If 80% of the customers are Thai and 20% are tourists, the food is good. If it’s flipped, you’re in a tourist zone and paying 2x.
Not Getting Sick
- Busy stalls = fresh food. Empty stalls are suspicious.
- Hot soup, hot wok, or skip. Pre-cooked seafood sitting out is the only real risk.
- Ice is safe. Comes from commercial factories, not tap water.
- Bottled water only. Bring a refillable bottle.
- Hand sanitizer. Many stalls have water for washing but no soap.
If you do get hit (it happens), the 7-Eleven has good medicine. Emergency SOS has the hospital and pharmacy numbers.
Practice Before You Go
The Speak Thai tool has audio for ordering food, asking the bill, and asking what’s spicy. The Food Guide tool has 18 “show to waiter” cards including allergies and preferences. Screenshot these before your trip.
